Freshly cleared land is vulnerable land. Remove the vegetation and you remove the root systems that hold soil in place and the canopy that breaks up rainfall before it hits the ground. A single heavy rainstorm on an unprotected cleared slope can move enormous amounts of topsoil — topsoil that took centuries to build and that you've paid to preserve. Erosion control is not optional on most Ontario clearing projects; it's part of a responsible clearing approach and often a legal requirement under municipal and conservation authority conditions. Why Erosion Happens After Clearing
Vegetated land handles rainfall through a multi-stage process: the canopy intercepts and slows rainfall, the organic surface layer (duff, leaf litter, moss) absorbs and distributes water, root systems hold the soil together and channel water downward, and microbial activity in healthy soil creates aggregate structure that resists surface washing.
When you clear land, all of these systems are disrupted simultaneously. Exposed mineral soil — especially fine-grained soils like sandy loams and clay-silts — is highly susceptible to splash erosion (individual raindrops dislodging soil particles) and sheet flow (thin sheets of water moving across a surface, carrying displaced soil). On any slope greater than 3%, even modest rain events can initiate measurable erosion.
In Muskoka, where thin soils over bedrock are precious and Lake Simcoe is protected by strict watershed regulations, erosion control after clearing is both ecologically critical and legally required.
Method 1: Forestry Mulching as Built-In Erosion Control
The most effective erosion control after clearing is one that's built into the clearing method itself. When we use forestry mulching — our preferred method for most Ontario clearing projects — all cleared material is processed in place into a 3–6 inch layer of wood chip mulch covering the entire cleared area.
This mulch layer provides immediate erosion protection: it absorbs and distributes rainfall rather than letting it run off, it holds the top fraction of the soil surface in place, and it prevents the "sealing" effect that happens when bare soil is beaten by rain (a soil crust that reduces infiltration and increases runoff).
On Muskoka Shield properties and on Simcoe County slopes near Barrie and Innisfil, we strongly recommend forestry mulching as the primary clearing method specifically for its erosion protection benefits. Conservation authorities often specify or prefer mulching for this reason.
Method 2: Temporary Seeding
For cleared areas that won't be constructed on immediately, temporary seeding with a fast-establishing cover crop is the most effective medium-term erosion control. The standard temporary seed mix for Ontario clearing sites includes annual ryegrass (fast germination), oats (quick cover), and sometimes winter wheat or winter rye for fall seeding.
Annual ryegrass can germinate in 5–10 days under good conditions and provides significant erosion protection within 3 weeks. It won't persist more than one season, which is intentional — you want temporary cover that can be replaced with permanent plantings without difficult competition.
For cleared areas in the Innisfil and Barrie area subject to municipal or LSCA erosion control conditions, temporary seeding is typically required within a specified time after clearing (often 14 days after initial disturbance). Check your permit conditions for specific requirements.

Erosion control blankets (ECBs) — also called erosion control matting or turf reinforcement matting — are woven or knitted mats installed on sloped surfaces after clearing. They provide immediate physical protection against surface erosion while seed beneath the blanket establishes root coverage.
ECBs are most appropriate for: slopes steeper than 3:1 (which are difficult to establish seed on without protection), areas adjacent to watercourses or stormwater outlets, and disturbed areas that need protection during a construction hiatus.
Biodegradable ECBs (jute, coir) break down naturally as the vegetation establishes. Permanent ECBs with synthetic reinforcement are used on high-velocity flow areas where permanent protection is needed. We can supply and install ECBs as part of a clearing and erosion control package on Muskoka shoreline projects and other sensitive-area clearing work.
Method 4: Silt Fencing
Silt fence is a temporary sediment control measure — a permeable geotextile fabric staked along the downhill perimeter of a disturbed area to intercept sheet flow and allow sediment to settle out before the water continues downslope. Silt fence is not an erosion prevention measure — it doesn't prevent erosion, it catches sediment that's already eroded.
For most municipal and conservation authority permit conditions in Ontario, silt fence is required around the perimeter of any disturbed area within 30 metres of a watercourse or wetland. On Muskoka shoreline projects, silt fence is installed between the work area and the water's edge before any clearing begins.
Silt fence is most effective when: properly installed with the fabric buried 6 inches in a trench, maintained regularly (sediment removed before it backs up over the fence height), and supplemented by other measures. Silt fence alone is not adequate erosion control for steep slopes.
Erosion Control for Muskoka Shield Properties
Muskoka's thin soils over bedrock require the most careful erosion control approach. Once the organic topsoil layer is lost from a Shield property, it doesn't regenerate in a human lifetime. Our approach on Muskoka lots:
- Forestry mulching as the primary clearing method to leave mulch cover in place
- Silt fence installed at the base of any disturbed slope before clearing begins
- Minimal soil disturbance — no unnecessary excavation outside the building footprint
- Immediate mulch or blanket cover for any bare mineral soil areas
- Temporary seeding of disturbed areas not being constructed on within 14 days
