When Do You Need Stump Grinding?
Stump grinding is appropriate in most situations after tree removal or land clearing. Here's when it matters most:
After tree removal in a residential lawn: If a tree was removed from your yard — whether by storm damage, disease, or deliberate removal — the stump left behind will take 10–20 years to decompose naturally. In that time it's a lawn care obstacle, a tripping hazard, and a target for wood-boring pests. Grinding takes an hour or two and leaves a surface ready for lawn re-establishment within weeks.
After land clearing for construction: Every stump within a building footprint must be removed — grinding to appropriate depth or, for foundations, full extraction. Stumps outside the footprint but within landscaping areas should be ground to below finish grade. Post-clearing stump grinding is typically scoped as part of our overall clearing package.
For driveway and parking area preparation: Stumps within planned driveway or parking areas must be ground to at least 12–18 inches below finished grade before granular base installation. Stumps left in place under gravel will cause surface depressions as they decay.
Before landscaping and lawn establishment: Stumps visible at or near ground level interfere with lawn mowers and garden equipment. Grinding to 4–6 inches below grade (or deeper) removes the obstacle and allows complete lawn establishment over the ground area.
After Muskoka cottage lot clearing: Muskoka cottage lots cleared for construction often have stumps on slopes and in areas where the thin soil over bedrock makes traditional extraction impossible. Grinding is the only practical option in these situations — and we have grinders specifically suited to working on Shield terrain with shallow rock.
Our Stump Grinding Equipment
We operate several stump grinders sized for different applications. The right equipment matters — trying to grind a 30-inch maple stump with a walk-behind grinder takes all day; bringing a production grinder to a tight backyard space risks damage to the lawn and fence.
Compact walk-behind grinders: For residential backyards, gated properties, and situations where access is limited to a standard fence gate or pedestrian pathway. These units can handle stumps up to 24 inches in diameter and work in spaces as narrow as 36 inches wide. They're slower than larger equipment but produce clean results in tight spaces.
Mid-size tracked grinders: Our most commonly deployed unit. Tracks for stability on slopes and terrain, handles stumps up to 36 inches diameter efficiently, fits through standard equipment gates (about 60 inches wide). Suitable for most residential and cottage property applications.
Large-diameter production grinders: For post-clearing large-scale site grinding and commercial applications. Can process stumps up to 48+ inches in diameter and handles large volumes of stumps quickly. Requires good open access to the site — not suitable for confined urban lots.
Stump Grinding vs. Stump Removal: Which Is Right?
We're often asked whether stump grinding or complete stump removal (excavation) is the better choice. The answer depends on what the ground will be used for.
Stump grinding is the right choice for: Lawns and gardens where the stump area will be replanted or seeded. Driveways and parking areas (grinding to 18 inches below finish grade). Clearing on Shield rock terrain where excavation isn't possible. Cost-conscious projects where the ground use doesn't require complete root removal.
Complete stump removal is the right choice for: Building foundations and slabs where any decomposing organic material creates subsidence risk. Areas where a full root system replacement is needed (e.g., planting new trees in exactly the same location). Properties where the extensive root system itself poses a problem for utility installation or underground work.

How deep does stump grinding go?
Standard stump grinding removes the stump to 12–18 inches below the original ground surface. This is sufficient for lawn establishment, landscaping, and driveways. For building foundations and concrete pads, we go deeper or excavate the stump completely to avoid future subsidence from decomposing organic material. When you book, tell us what the area will be used for after grinding so we can recommend the right depth.
What happens to the chips after stump grinding?
The grinding process produces a pile of wood chips mixed with soil. You have several options: leave the chips in place to settle and decompose (they'll compact down significantly over 6–12 months and make excellent soil amendment), rake them into the surrounding area as mulch, or we can haul them off site for an additional charge. Most clients prefer to use the chips on site — it's free organic material and avoids trucking costs.
Can you grind a stump that's very close to a fence or foundation wall?
Yes, with compact grinding equipment. We have stump grinders in multiple sizes — our compact grinders can access stumps within 18 inches of structures, between fence posts, and in other confined spaces that larger equipment can't reach. For stumps right against a foundation wall, we assess the situation first — grinding right against concrete or stone can damage the wall, so we may recommend hand tools for the final inch or two.
What about the roots that extend out from the stump?
Standard stump grinding removes the visible stump and the top of the root system. Surface roots that are visible can be ground as well — we'll quote them separately if they're significant. The deeper root system — main taproots and lateral roots extending beyond the stump — stays in the ground and decomposes naturally. This takes anywhere from 5–15 years depending on the species. For building foundations, we recommend complete root ball extraction rather than grinding.
