Land Clearing Equipment Explained: What Each Machine Does

When you hire a land clearing contractor, you're paying for their equipment as much as their labour. Understanding what the various machines do helps you evaluate quotes, understand why a contractor recommends one approach over another, and confirm that the equipment proposed is actually appropriate for your terrain and project type. Forestry Mulcher (Track-Mounted)

The track-mounted forestry mulcher is the workhorse of modern Ontario land clearing. It's a purpose-built machine consisting of a rubber-tracked carrier with a large drum attachment at the front. The drum rotates at high speed and is fitted with carbide-tipped cutting teeth that shred vegetation into chips as the machine moves forward.

What it does well: Processes trees up to 8–10 inches diameter in a single pass. Clears an acre of light to medium brush per day. Leaves mulch in place as ground cover. Works on slopes with rubber tracks. Minimal soil disturbance. Excellent for Muskoka Shield terrain and conservation-regulated areas where minimizing disturbance is required.

What it doesn't do well: Trees larger than 10 inches in diameter significantly slow the machine. Does not remove stumps below grade — the root system stays in the ground. Not appropriate for building footprint clearing where complete stump removal is needed.

Excavator with Mulching or Clearing Head

A tracked excavator — the familiar "backhoe" shape with a boom, stick, and bucket — is one of the most versatile pieces of clearing equipment when equipped with the right attachments. For land clearing, excavators are used with several different tool configurations:

Excavator with thumb attachment: The standard setup for tree and stump removal. The bucket has a hydraulic thumb that grips tree trunks or root balls. The excavator reaches out, grabs the tree or stump, and extracts it from the ground. Highly effective for complete stump removal — the root ball comes out whole. Leaves a hole that needs to be backfilled.

Excavator with mulching head: A mulching drum attached to the excavator boom instead of a bucket. The operator can reach over obstacles and process vegetation precisely. Useful for working around structures, clearing in tight spaces, and selective clearing work where precision matters.

When we use excavators: Building footprint clearing where stumps must be fully extracted. Working on steep or inaccessible slopes where tracked mulchers can't travel safely. Shoreline clearing where precise reach is needed. Large stump removal on post-clearing projects.

Skid Steer with Brush Cutter or Mulching Head

Skid steers are compact, highly manoeuvrable machines that turn by skidding their tracks or wheels rather than steering conventionally. They're commonly used in land clearing with brush cutter or mulching head attachments.

Rubber-tracked compact track loader with mulching head: A smaller, lighter version of the full forestry mulcher. Fits through standard fence gates (36–48 inches), works in residential backyards and constrained urban lots, and can access areas that a full-size mulcher can't reach. Less production capacity than a dedicated forestry mulcher but more flexible.

Wheeled skid steer: Faster on flat, firm surfaces but creates more ground disturbance than tracked machines on soft soil. We use wheeled skid steers mainly on hardstand or firm ground surfaces.

When we use compact track loaders for clearing: Urban residential lots in Barrie and Innisfil where space is limited. Fenced properties where gate access limits equipment size. Confined areas around existing structures. Lighter brush clearing work on smaller properties.

Chainsaw Crews

Chainsaws remain essential in land clearing despite the abundance of mechanical equipment. There are tasks that only a skilled chainsaw operator can perform effectively:

• Felling large-diameter trees (over 12 inches) in specific directions — away from buildings, power lines, or keeper trees
• Notch-cutting large trees to create predictable fall direction on restricted sites
• Selective thinning in forest stands where only specific stems are removed
• Hand clearing in confined spaces where equipment can't reach
• Limbing and bucking large fallen trees before mulching or chipping

Stump Grinders

Stump grinders are specialized machines designed for one task: grinding stumps to below grade. They use a rotating cutting wheel with carbide teeth to grind the stump progressively, producing a pile of wood chips mixed with soil.

Walk-behind stump grinders: Compact, can fit through a fence gate (30–36 inches wide), suitable for single stumps in residential backyards. Slower than large grinders but accessible in tight spaces.

Tracked mid-size stump grinders: Our most commonly deployed unit. Handles stumps up to 36 inches in diameter, has ground clearance for uneven terrain, and fits through standard equipment access gates.

Flail Mowers and Brush Cutters

Flail mowers use rapidly spinning chains or hammers to shred vegetation at the surface level. They're effective for tall grass, light brush, and annual weed growth on flat or gently rolling terrain. Less effective for woody shrubs and not capable of processing trees.

We use flail mowers for: overgrown field clearing on agricultural properties, roadside and right-of-way maintenance, and annual maintenance clearing on rural properties that need light brush management rather than full clearing.
